Non-Surgical Weight Management
Medically supervised weight management for people who aren't ready for surgery, aren't suited to it, or would rather avoid it. You see a surgeon and a dietitian who work together, so if your needs change, you don't have to start again somewhere else.

Who It's For
- people who want medical help with their weight but don't want surgery, or aren't ready to decide
- people who aren't suitable for surgery, or for whom surgery isn't advised right now
- people with weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, fatty liver, joint pain or reflux
- people who want to understand every option, including surgery, before choosing a path
Your First Appointment
Dr Lourensz will talk with you about:
- your history and what you've tried before
- related health conditions, your current medicines and recent tests
- your eating patterns, sleep, activity and anything that makes weight harder to manage
- your goals, and what you want out of treatment
You may need blood tests or other tests first. Your treatment options, both medical and surgical, are then discussed with you individually, including the benefits, risks, costs and what ongoing care involves.
Ongoing Care
- Regular reviews, every six weeks to start with, then less often once things are stable.
- Nutrition support with Louise Becroft, Dietitian, to make sure you are eating enough protein and nutrients and keeping your muscle while you lose weight.
- Monitoring of your weight, body composition, blood tests and related conditions, with the plan adjusted as you go.
- Help with side effects or problems that come up along the way.
- Psychology or physician review if it would help.
- Your GP is kept up to date after each stage, and we work with them on your other health conditions.
Planning for the Long Term
Obesity is a long-term condition, and weight tends to come back when treatment stops. Part of your care is planning for the years ahead: how to keep the weight off, what to do if progress stalls or weight returns, and when it might be worth thinking about surgery.
If You Later Choose Surgery
Some people decide down the track that surgery is the right step. Because Dr Lourensz and Louise offer both, your history and care continue with the same team. See Weight Loss Surgery.
Costs
Appointments with Dr Lourensz are billed per visit; see Patient Information for fees and rebates. Louise Becroft, Dietitian, bills separately: $200 for the first appointment (60 minutes) and $100 for a review (30 minutes). With a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (previously called a chronic disease management plan), Medicare pays back $63.40 a visit, for up to five allied health visits a year across all providers. You can claim through private health extras instead, but not both for the same visit. The cost of any treatment is discussed at your consultation.
